Will filing a credit report dispute make the debt go away?

I have a collection agency after me for a debt. If I dispute the debt and the credit reporting agency does not get a validation, I know they will remove it from my credit report, but will the collection agency have to write it off as well?

  1. no it does not.
  2. No, they can still sue you.
  3. not necessarily. It might help in getting the disputed charges resolved. But the resolution is not guaranteed to be the one you want. But you do need to dispute the debt every time you are called about it. Also write to the company that is trying to charge you by certified mail disputing it. If you do not dispute an invoice within reasonable time the debt is assumed to be valid.
  4. you have to get the whoever removes it from the credit report to write an official letter to the collection agency that you are clear. after all, the company who reported you to collections should be the one to reverse the complaint. it will probably take a lot of effort and follow through on your part, tho. Good luck to you.
  5. Yes. The company is insured to cover the cost of the collection agency. I had someone use my name to rent up over 400 dollars worth of videos at a hollywood video. I was out of the country when it occurred, but it was hurting my credit report because they turned it over to a collection agency. Once it was disputed, I contacted the collection company and told them that it had been settled. I also threatened to sue them if I received another call from them. I never got a call again and it no longer existes on my credit report.
  6. depends on the debt. Is it valid? why are you disputing it? If your just trying to blow off what you owe it wont work, but if it is a valid claim..most times they dont pursue it. I have had them threaten to harassment...I told them about the harassment law and they went away...but my claim was valid the product was a joke and the company were crooks....hope it helps
  7. Most likely they will get the validation and it will not be removed. But if they do not get it, its does not make your debt go away from the creditor or collection agency. They can either bug the heck out of you or sue you. In some cases after a period of time they will write it off and you will have to pay taxes on it as it was income for you. However even if the original creditor writes it off they can still sell it to a collection agency and the process starts all over again. Why don't you just pay it? You can also try to settle it for a lower amount but get it in writing from them. This will also affect you credit for a few years. I am assuming you really do own the money.
  8. Well if you look at your credit report and know you never went to the company they claim you owe money to. You have to report identity theft to a credit bureau. Then send paper work to the companies you know you never went to and dispute it. Showing proof that it wasn't your debt. Other wise you can't do anything about it.
