Can I dispute this on my credit report?
I have an account in collections that I'm trying to pay. I called the collection agency listed on my credit report & was told they gave the account back to the original creditors. I called the original creditors who say they don't have an account for me on file. I asked the collection agency if they can still report this item if they no longer have the acct. I was told "Yes, until you pay it". How can I pay this acct if no one has ownership of it? Can I dispute this item and have it removed from my credit report?

- 100% dispute it. The credit bureaus will send the collector a letter requesting to verify the account. If they can't verify - it will be removed. The people at the credit bureaus are bad tempered idiots - ask anyone that has dealt with them. /
- Follow the dispute procedures on the credit bureau websites. You dispute to the bureaus, not to the collection agency.
- Dispute it with the credit bureau. They have 30 days to verify or off it goes.
