How to repair credit delinquency due to divorce?
My ex husband was ordered to pay all of our jointly combined debts in our divorce, but to my knowledge and credit report he hasn't. How do I go about repairing my credit or disputing these overdues, since they're no longer my responsibility? Pretty much everything is now in collections and I couldn't apply for credit for toilet paper at this point.....how do I fix it, I can't afford it all by myself...

- Creditors are not bound by divorce decrees. So if he did not pay and they are your accounts then you are responsible. If they are joint accounts then both of you are responsible. In either case you will have a hit to your credit if they went unpaid. Not what you want to hear but it is the reality of your situation. The only thing you can do is use that decree to file a civil suit against him. He would then be ordered to pay you at which time you could pay the creditors. If he has no money it would be a hollow victory. But, the judgment would also show up on his credit report which will harm his ability to get new credit. When you get to the point of paying them off make sure that you have an agreement from the creditors in writing that they will remove the negative information. Be sure to have this agreement before you send them any money.
- I don't know how this works as I haven't tried it as I haven't been married...... I know with Experian that you can dispute each one of the accounts that he was ordered to pay and chose belongs to ex-spouse and in the box put that it was court ordered.... don't know if that will just put a note on your report or removed after it is investigated, as I have stated, I haven't been married so I am not sure on this.... but it is a start..... I would do that with all 3 credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Experian & Trans Union.......... Hope this helps......
- It's going to take a long time. I would write all 3 credit reporting agencies and see what you can do. If you need to buy something in the next 5-7 years you may have to rely on a friendly relative with good credit until you get it all paid off. Also, a good resource is... http://debt.123thebest.info/credit_card.html Good Luck.
