Repair Credit Report Help

AFNI and Verizon on my credit report?

I noticed 2 weeks ago that AFNI has 2 accounts on my credit report. I have only recently begun to repair my credit, so this is the first and only time that I knew these accounts existed. The accounts are for Verizon, who does not provide service in my area. I called Verizon to see what was going on, and was told that someone had phone service in an area where I have never lived. My sister lives in the area, but not at the address listed for this account, and she does not know the people listed at the address on the account. Verizon told me that since mail was sent to this address and the phone bill was paid for a few months, that it must obviously be mine, and if not it must obviously be my sister since she lives in the area. The bill is almost 4 years old, so can I send a debt validation request even though the 30 days would be up, even though I have never received anything from them? Also, the address listed on the account is now empty and run down. I already tried to dispute it with the credit bureaus but it came back as updated. What do I do? Any advice?

  1. Since you have never received any communication from the debt collector - go ahead and file a debt validation request from the AFNI. Make sure that you send your letter via certified mail with return receipt requested. ** Keep Copies of ALL Correspondence ** Make sure that you specify in your letter that you have never heard from them, and that you found out about this debt based on your credit report. Also be sure to document that is NOT your debt, and that you never had phone service at the address listed nor did you ever live at the address listed. DO NOT mention your sister - as far as your responsibility is concerned - she is NOT a factor. Always tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. If they ask - just tell then that you do not know who lived there PERIOD. Stick with that answer - you did not live there - you did not have phone service there - this is not your debt - you do not know whose debt it is - and you do not know who lived there.
